Excerpt: The year 2002 holds a special significance for mountain regions throughout the world: not only is this the International Year of Mountains, but it is also the International Year of Ecotourism. Mountains, with their remote and majestic beauty, are among the most popular destinations for ecotourism, and mountain tourism can be a key factor in the focal concern for both events: the overall improvement in people?s quality of life through sustainable development initiatives in economic development and environmental conservation. In both socio-economic and environmental terms, tourism in mountain regions is a mixed blessing; it can be a source of problems, but also offers many opportunities.
