William Shakespeare naquit a Stratford-sur-Avon, dans une maison sous les tuiles de laquelle etait cachee une profession de foi catholique commençant par ces mots : Moi John Shakespeare. John etait le pere de William. La maison, situee dans la ruelle Henley Street, etait humble, la chambre ou Shakespeare vint au monde etait miserable ; des murs blanchis a la chaux, des solives noires s'entrecoupant en croix, au fond une assez large fenetre avec de petites vitres ou l'on peut lire aujourd'hui, parmi d'autres noms, le nom de Walter Scott. Ce logis pauvre abritait une famille dechue. Le pere de William Shakespeare avait ete alderman; son aïeul avait ete bailli. Shake-speare signifie secoue-lance ; la famille en avait le blason, un bras tenant une lance, armes parlantes confirmees, dit-on, par la reine Elisabeth en 1595, et visibles, a l'heure ou nous ecrivons, sur le tombeau de Shakespeare dans l'eglise de Stratford-sur-Avon. On est peu d'accord sur l'orthographe du mot Shake-speare comme nom de famille, on l'ecrit diversement Shakspere, Shakespare, Shakespeare, Shakspeare ; le dix-huitieme siecle l'ecrivait habituellement Shakespear; le traducteur actuel a adopte l'orthographe Shakespeare, comme la seule exacte, et donne pour cela des raisons sans replique.
