Excerpts: The image of the United States in the postwar period has been T taken from the title of an 1873 novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, The Gilded Age, in which the authors satirized the nation as a land of corruption and materialism. Accurate or not, the label has stuck. The period has become one characterized by dishonest lobbyists, weak or corrupt Presidents, and a Congress dominated by crass politicians for sale to the highest bidder. Congressman James McKenzie?s 1880 criticism that the Committee on Ways and Means was a legislative mausoleum for revenue reform reflected this prevailing pessimism.
